When it comes to once-in-a-lifetime experiences, it’s hard to beat those on offer in Australia’s Red Centre. This magical stretch of the Australian outback is full of endless possibilities and wild adventures, all centred around one of our nation’s most recognisable and sacred landmarks, Uluru (Ayers Rock). Now, the siren’s call of the great red north has become even louder, because an all-new, immersive Indigenous art experience is set to be unveiled this August.
Sunrise Journeys will illuminate the talents of three Anangu artists, Selina Kulitja (Maruku Arts), Denise Brady (Kaltukatjara Art) and Valerie Brumby (Walkatjara Art), who have collaborated on a bespoke dot painting that shares the story of their deep connection to culture and Country. The vast desert landscape of Uluru and Kata Tjuta will become a natural canvas for their artwork – Ngura nganampa wiru mulapa, meaning "our Country is truly beautiful" in the local Pitjantjatjara language – which will be recreated on the dusty red sands before sunrise using cutting-edge laser and light projection. Gasp!
If it wasn't already magical enough, local musician Jeremy Whiskey has composed a special soundtrack to harmonise with the natural soundscapes, artists' narration and gently pulsing lights, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of an Uluru sunrise.
Sunrise Journeys will be unveiled on August 1 as part of Ayers Rock Resort’s 40th birthday celebrations, along with a brand new native high tea. The immersive art experience adds to the Resort’s already spectacular line-up of experiences, including the world’s biggest daily drone show Wintjiri Wiru, one of Australia’s largest art installations Field of Light, and the acclaimed Sounds of Silence dinner under the starry skies.
