At Time Out we love sharing cities with you – and we love shining a light on the most exciting experiences and communities within them. Which is why it feels natural for us to continue guiding you through the virtual experiences of the rapidly emerging Metaverse – and also to make our own first step into the Metaverse by launching a Time Out House in the new virtual community, Metropolis World, which you can access and explore yourself from today.

Just as Time Out exists to unlock the best of great cities like London, New York, Sydney and Tokyo in the physical world, so we increasingly want to unlock the emerging communities and spaces of the virtual world – so that we all know what to embrace and avoid in this developing space which merges digital and physical experiences like nothing before it.

But what is the Metaverse? Fair question – hard and fast definitions are slippery and tough to pin down right now, which is why we have put together this handy cheat sheet that dives into some of the key questions and definitions.

The author Matthew Ball has recently spent over 300 pages attempting to define it in his book The Metaverse and How It Will Revolutionize Everything. Ball sums up the Metaverse as: ‘a persistent and interconnected network of 3D virtual worlds that will eventually serve as the gateway to most online experiences, and also underpin much of the physical world.’

At Time Out, it’s a movement – often characterised as ‘the next Internet’ – that we want to join and to guide our followers through. So, as an exciting first step, Time Out has partnered with Metropolis World, a new Metaverse community which will allow users anywhere to explore six entirely virtual new cities. The founders of Metropolis describe it as ‘a 360° curated universe that blends unique properties, e-commerce, gaming, art, and experiences that span both the digital and physical worlds’.

Metropolis will ultimately consist of six virtual cities. In the first of those, Celeste, you’ll find the Time Out House, and you can explore over 500 other handdrawn buildings in Celeste in an experience similar to wandering through an art gallery. Soon you’ll also be able to enjoy exclusive experiences within this community, curated by Founding Citizens including Steve Aoki, Dillon Francis, and Blondish.

You can find out more about Metropolis World and Celeste here or by joining their community on TwitterInstagram and Discord. You can make your own call at how deep you want to go into Metropolis and Celeste, from just wandering about the city for free like a virtual flaneur or, if you’re more bold, becoming a citizen of Celeste by buying a NFT passport (but be cautious and remember with any investment there’s risk attached – see more details in the disclaimer below and via our FAQs).

This is just the beginning, for the Time Out House in Celeste, and also for the Time Out journey in the Metaverse. See you on the other side, and watch out for much more to come as Time Out evolves as your ultimate guide to making the most of the Metaverse.
